So, you have finally decided to build your very own gym. The first thing to do is to analyze the area that you will be using. Depending on how much space you have, your options will change. If you have a lot of space, you could invest in a small track to run around, and if space is small, then perhaps a treadmill will do instead.

Start From the Ground Up

No matter what type of home gym you plan on building, you need to start with the floor. If you plan on an aerobics space, you could go with a wooden platform or a rubber floor. If you are thinking of doing mostly weights, CrossFit or any other discipline that throws heavy things made of metal on the floor, save yourself the headache and go with rubber flooring.

The right floor not only acts as protection for the surface below, but it also protects your body from injury. It can add extra support and cushion to disperse the kinetic energy that would otherwise clash in your body. The floor is your most important factor to consider and should be your first step.

What Will You Do?

You may be planning to use your gym as a weightlifting space or as a CrossFit studio, but If you want to turn your space into a yoga studio or a dojo, your needs will be very different. Make sure you define the activity you plan to engage in your gym as well as possible. Once you know what you want, you can find what you need.

If you don’t have a lot of space, machines might be the best solution. Machines pack a lot of bang for your buck when it comes to space. You can get a machine that will work out just about every part of your body and fit in the corner of a room. On the other hand, you can go with free weights, benches, and a long list of equipment that can fill up a whole house.

Make It Yours

At the end of the day, what matters is whether you use the gym or not. If you make it your own and build the space to your liking and specifications, you will likely use it again and again. It can be as simple as adding a TV or a sound system to keep you entertained while you work out. Maybe you like blue and making the walls in some shade of that color will get you going. Whatever it is, find it and use it. Make the space your own.
